We went down to the boat-ramp, where a medium crowd was gathering to watch a number of different fireworks displays. We could just barely see the largest display, 10 miles away in town, at the horizon. Some wealthy neighbors put on a semi-professional show about a mile away, then there was a moderate one a couple of piers down, and finally an ordinary fireworks-stand production right there in the parking lot with us. The last featured a guy in his cups who kept holding the bottle rockets in his hand, then hooting and yelling after each one went off. I'll bet he's not feeling well today.

I'll bet not! Sounds like a very good 4th.

Interesting note, Georgia also legalized fireworks this year. The local news stated that area hospitals experienced no uptick in the number of fireworks related injuries this holiday (about 21). So either no one in the area knew that they were legalized, or they didn't care, or this nanny-state-ism isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Funny story: a cop I know was telling me about how a few years ago he came upon a bunch of teenagers who had taken their .22s down to the river and were plinking cans. When he pulled up they hid them all and claimed, when asked, that they were "just setting off fireworks."

"That's funny, boys," he said, "because shooting rifles on your own land is legal. Fireworks, now..."
