I've generally found motorcycle rallies and biker bars to be extremely friendly places, in truth. Still, if you just wandered in and you don't have any background, this is an actually helpful newspaper article that will convey information that will improve your life.
Partly this is by actually writing down the "unwritten rules."

Come to think of it, versions of both of those are in the Ten Commandments. They had asses instead of motorcycles, but it made the list.

Most good advice like that can be summarized by "Don't be an idiot," but it's good to know what exactly counts as idiocy. It varies from culture to culture.
Here's another fun article I saw while visiting the Cowboy State Daily. I didn't know there was a Mongol derby:
"The Mongol Derby follows the "postal route" established by Genghis Khan across the Mongolian Steppe in 1224. Horse messengers used the route so the leader of the Mongol Empire could communicate with the far-flung corners of his conquests.
"Today, the Mongol Derby holds the record for the longest multi-horse race in the world. Participants ride "semi-wild" Mongolian horses between 25 stations along the 620-mile route."
Apparently a woman from Wyoming has been one of three women in the lead the last few days.

My wife has been talking about another endurance race run over the Sierra Nevadas lately. It's one of her things.
Echoing TD, one would think these things were obvious. But perhaps not.
That's a pretty cool hobby.
I'm aware of and have seen runners pass by who were in the Badwater ultramarathon- From Badwater in Death Valley (-212 ft) to Whitney Portal in the Eastern Sierra (8,374 ft). The actual vertical on the run is even more than the differential as there are mountain passes to get out of Death Valley you have to climb up and down. I'd not heard about similar horse racing there, sounds interesting. Lots of pack companies in the Eastern Sierra. Come to think of it, that might possibly be a great way for you to tour the Eastern Sierra, Grim.
