In some Asian cultures, it's considered a loss of face and slinging mud on the parent's faces, if their children act against society.
So to recover standing, the parent must demonstrate that they can exert authority over the child, via the double apology.
I understand the social forces at work, but it's still pretty impressive to see in play. When was the last time you saw someone stand up and say, 'I'm sorry, I obviously didn't raise my kid right'?
When was the last time you saw anyone in America express shame at all?
I've seen a lot of people say they are sorry, but their body language proves it is deceptive.
So sincere people whose words and body language concur with each other? Rare or non existent in the English language sphere.
