Motherly Love

My niece Clio, in the midst of a story about kids who were mean: "But my mom always says, if somebody does something mean to you, do it back."

Me: "Wait, what does your mother say?"

Clio: "Do it back to them."

Me: "Your momma taught you 'Get revenge'?"

Clio: "Yes."

What is in a name?

Well, I found a great deal that explains the " Revenge angle"

......Clio is the name of the ancient Greek mythological muse of history and heroic poetry

The Musai, or Muses as they are known in English, were a group of nine nymphs in Greek mythology. Usually considered to be the daughters of Zeus and the Titaness Mnemosyne, the sisters gave inspiration to artists.

They were particularly revered by poets and musicians, who believed that each of the nine Muses inspired a different genre of their art.

Traditionally Clio, after reprimanding the godTraditionally Clio, after reprimanding the goddess Aphrodite for her passionate love for Adonis, was punished by Aphrodite, who made her fall in love with Pierus, king of Macedonia. From that union, in some accounts, was born Hyacinthus, a young man of great beauty who was later killed by his lover, the god Apollo. From his blood sprang a flower (the hyacinth). In art Clio was frequently represented with the heroic trumpet and the clepsydra (water clock).dess Aphrodite for her passionate love for Adonis, was punished by Aphrodite, who made her fall in love with Pierus, king of Macedonia. Clio was a Younger Muse and thus one of the nine daughters of the god Zeus and the Titanide Mnemosyne; Zeus having lain with Mnemosyne on nine consecutive nights.

The sisters of Clio were Calliope, Euterpe, Erato, Melpomene, Ourania, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore and Thalia.

Clio and Aphrodite
Clio, as an individual, was rarely identified, although in the Bibliotheca (Pseudo-Apollodorus), the muse is said to have aroused the anger of the goddess Aphrodite, when Clio, had criticised the goddess of beauty for having fallen in love with Adonis.

In retribution, Aphrodite would cause Clio to fall in love with a mortal, King Pierus of Pella, the king for whom Pieria was named.

Thank you, Greg. Locally of course we know who Clio the Muse is — that’s not a name you give by accident — but there’s no reason to think the entire audience does.

She has a cousin, Clieaux, from South Lousiana, and Clieaux say:
"Don't get made, don't get even; Get ahead."

I've worked with a lot of Cajuns and heard this many times, and seen it in action more than a few.

Ah, yes. Learning things about family which you never, ever, suspected.

For the record, her mother my sister emphatically denies having said that.

I suspected something might have been lost in translation.

I'm sorry your sister didn't say it. I don't think of it as revenge; I think of it as deterrence. :+)
