Dreaming and thinking

From Maggie's Farm today:
“I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”
Rabindranath Tagore
Another way to say "dreaming and waking" is "gut and head," or feeling and discerning: the wise heart. Add action, and you have the will, or soul.

The translation I learned many years ago was a little different:

I slept and dreamt that life was joy.
I awoke and saw that life was duty.
I acted and behold, duty was joy.

My interpretation is that the idea of life being all about joy is a dream, something we wish were true but isn’t. The reality is that life is all about duty and this we do not like when we first realize it. The irony and the blessing is that doing our duty - living life as it is and as we are meant to - is what brings joy into our lives.
