National Geographic has a wonderful article on what is believed to be a long-lost Leonardo da Vinci painting. It is a beautiful piece, with a sorrowful story.

Looks like he was on the French side, and a close friend of the king. See page 11, footnote 39.
Ah, good catch.
I guess he must have left the service of the Sforzas at somepoint.
Some of those guys changed sides more often than some people change underwear.
