"I offer my congratulations on the victory over the fallacious Zionist regime," a message posted Thursday on Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's X account declared. Another post added the bold claim that Israel's government "was practically knocked out and crushed under the blows of the Islamic Republic."

Well, he did successfully intercept more than a dozen MOABs and more than two dozen vaunted American cruise missiles with his still developmental nuclear facilities.

One wonders with longtime dictators whether they believe this or are just trying to go down unbowed.
It's hard for me to imagine that they believe it. I take it as a 1984-ish way to control their people. But, I have no particular insight to base that on.
I can't pretend to be an ME anthropological expert, but to my eyes, it's cultural- they take "never show weakness" to an extreme as a matter of course. The point of posturing like this when you're getting pummeled is to make it seem like you don't think it's that bad and deny them whatever satisfaction comes of that.
