They aren’t really. They’re much more digestible than the things we give out soldiers and Marines to eat. But they do have a similar heating mechanism.
Not as much protein as they should have, in my opinion, but not terrible as emergency rations.
Son #4 who was in the USMC, sent some to Son #3, our other Romanian. He didn't think they were too bad. He never figured out you were supposed to heat them with those other packets.
Protein supplements would seem like a really good idea in the emergency supplies, now that you mention it. I bet the Kirkland protein bars I like would keep for a long time.
As long as they have tabasco......! I have eaten a lot of military mre's, most are OK, some are simply awful.
For emergency rations to stash in the car, they are nearly unbeatable. TP, matches, salt, Tabasco, gum, coffee, drink mix and a weird pressed cake- plus the main course . PB, and a cracker- all one needs is a gallon of water. Hopefully, they still have matches, even though the smokes are gone.

Dad said that the USMC ran on Tobasco™ sauce. And coffee that made Navy coffee look mild and tame.
