I’ll probably make the honey cakes later this week. This afternoon, I made Bombur’s request from Bilbo’s kitchen. I rendered almost the same amount of lard pre-cooking the pork as I used to make the rye short crust.
Not a very Iron Age, Classical Age, Dark Age, or even Early Medieval food, really. Bombur asked for it because he was in The Hobbit and specifically in Middle Earth before it had quite separated from Faerie. So 19th C rural West Midland cuisine seemed correct in that mixing of eras. Though the ingredients would be present, I'm not sure they had such in Gondor. Certainly not in Lothlorien.
I would definitely settle as close to the Shire as they would allow if I moved to Middle-Earth, and such niceties as the pictured pie is one one reason.

That is a fine-looking crust.
