I have an acquaintance on my rail trail who has done this pilgrimage twice and is going again this season.

Very nice. I think that would be a wonderful pilgrimage to take.

It is a wonderful trip, whether as a pilgrimage or just a hike. We are still in contact with some of those we met. Also, everyone was kind and relatively social; jerks don’t tend to follow the Camino.

I've heard stories from people who have done it. It does sound wonderful.

The Wiki has a photo of The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. It is one beautiful building. That reminds me that during and before the Spanish Civil War, those on the left/Republican/Popular Front side vandalized/ destroyed much of Spain's churches or monasteries and the religious artifacts (sculptures, paintings, etc.) within the churches or monasteries. This was in addition to killing about 6,800 Roman Catholic clerics in the initial months of the war.

Lefty historians such as Paul Preston claim that this hostility towards the Roman Catholic church was justified because of the church's hostility to the Republic. That is, to a large degree, putting the cart before the horse. The lefty vandalism and destruction directed at the Church in the beginning months of the war caused many Roman Catholics to change from neutrality to support of the Nationals/rightists.

Though it would be accurate to state that even before the war, there was Roman Catholic opposition to the Popular Front/Republicans. This opposition came from the Second Republic's hostility toward the Church. From Wiki: The Second Spanish Republic.
the Second Republic excluded the Church from education by prohibiting teaching by religious institutes, even in private schools), confiscated Church property and investments, provided for restrictions and prohibitions on ownership of Church property, and banned the Society of Jesus.[29][30]
