The Horse Pull

After a pleasant early dinner with Thos., I took my mother to the horse pull.

The winner, pulling 9,500 pounds for over eight feet, was a local team.

It’s an interesting sport. The ‘full pull’ is 27.5 feet for no reason anyone seems to know. They pull in stages that increase by a thousand pounds to eight thousand, then by five hundred each thereafter. Beautiful draft horses.

I'd love to see that. Those old draft horses are amazing animals.

Had to see it in action- Wow. Hardest part was getting them hooked up! Chomping at the bit to go to work!

Thanks for the video, douglas. Impressive animals.

There's a show from the BBC called 'Victorian Farm' or something like that. A historian and two experimental archeologists live on a preserved Victorian-era farm and live like Victorian farmers for a year. The number of things they use a draft horse for is impressive. Those horses were pretty much every kind of engine for the farmer, whether tractor, truck, the engine for a grain grinder, whatever.

Here's a good video. Two draft horses help pull a semi up an icy hill.
