Basic map and compass and terrain reading skills are essential. GPS is nice, but not fundamental.

That looks a lot like a Boy Scouts compass there!
It’s a Suunto, from Finland. I think they’re pretty good.
Having had GPS fail on me when I needed them, I am a firm believer in the MAP and compass (and ground-based radio-navigation aids where applicable.)LittleRed1
