Jenny and the Mexicats

In the spirit of trying out new things, I thought some music to chill on a beach with would be good.

It's not terrible.

I particularly like the trumpet here, and the sound of Spanish. I listen to more Spanish-language music these days than Japanese. It's very easy on the ears. And some French, newish chanson-sounding stuff, swing & jazz.

Interestingly, the singer / trumpeter is English, I believe. The band also has Spanish & Mexican band-members.

I’m amused by a self-consciously “Mexican” band in California sporting a Misfits shirt and going to Venice Beach. Cultural appropriation! Not that they aren’t welcome to it.

Yeah, amusing and kinda normal I suspect.

In L.A. you're at least as likely to see a Latino wearing a Misfits shirt as a white guy- maybe more likely, and everyone goes to Venice Beach (or used to- that was 9 years ago, I don't know that *anyone& goes now). I would also define them as a self-consciously Mexican-American band- they're derivative of the traditional Mexican forms, but clearly hybridized. Was surprised to see turban-rollerskate dude strumming on the boardwalk till I realized that was 9 years ago. He's been a fixture since the eighties I think.
