Traveling Anew

Today I am packing for another trip to the DC region, my second in a month. I will be there for a week in case any of you are passing through.

Someday I hope I get to go somewhere more fun than DC and various other warzones. Once I did get to go to Jerusalem, for which I remain very grateful; and some of the warzones have had their attractions. The southern Philippines were truly beautiful, and Iraq was at least a field of honor and a place of great interest. Perhaps it is too much to wish to go to Scotland, or to Spain.

UPDATE: That piece is from the "Ladies Love Outlaws" album, which has also this funny song that I don't think I've ever put up here before.

And of course, for those who have gotten to travel widely, there's always the piece initially made famous by Hank Snow, and yet more famously recorded by Johnny Cash.

I always hated going to DC. First, the drive up there always sucks, especially coming up to Quantico, which is always a cluster because that's where the special hov highway comes together with I-95.

Then the other drivers in DC are some of the worst...I'm surprised there aren't more road rage incidents.

One bright spot is/was Rockland BBQ in Alexandria. They have great BBQ, but only serve craft beers on draft so don't expect to get any domestics or imports. If you're lucky, you might get up there during their "Grills Gone Wild" week, where they will have different types of wild game fare. The last time I was up there, they had Yak burgers, Bison Sausage and Ostrich Fajitas.

I was on a tour of the Supreme Court a few years ago.

I start out not liking cities overmuch--too many people in them. But DC was a cast-iron mess. Virtually necessary to take taxis everywhere since parking is so limited and the bicycle mob thinks they own the streets--their bicycle lanes are worse than the HOV lanes.

The hotel we were in was supposed to be one of the more upscale hotels, but I've stayed in upscale motels in other cities that were better.

The Court tour was good, but it also was good to get back out of that city.

You have my sympathies, Grim.

I really enjoyed Scotland last summer, but I stayed off the beaten path, and was ahead of the main tourist season. I do wish Sterling Battlefield was more walkable - much of it is now farmed. Unless you are aware that the river was once tidal and how that affected the battle, you miss a little of why it was such a key location, even with the information at the museum there. I didn't get to Culloden, but I wandered much of the Borders country.

Fare Well. DC sounds about as appealing as going into Mordor unarmed.
