The Feast of Thomas a Becket

A martyr, St. Thomas of Becket was the Archbishop of Canterbury. I assume that the story is well known here.

When the Reformation began, his was the first feast stricken from the prayer book and calendar. Henry VIII did not like saints who opposed the government in the name of the church.

Eamon Duffy's book about the English church on the eve of the Reformation goes into it a little. His catalogue for an exhibit of prayer books has more information.

Interestingly one of the first churches dedicated to him was in Hungary, under the Communists- a message on the importance of freedom of the church. There is a relic of St. Beckett in Esztergom.
