I was not just bad luck. It was poorly planned in many ways, not least of which was a scheduled arrival in November. Also, their number included many tradesmen, the sort who would be later very useful in a colony, but virtually none who had any experience living off the land.

If I seem harsh about them, I will note that I am a direct descendant of at least 9 of them, including the least respectable Stephen Hopkins several times over.

I think that is one of the most effective graphics I've ever seen. It presents the statistics clearly and accurately, but also imparts the social and emotional information connected to the data extremely well. Edward Tufte would be proud, I think.
