Cultural appropriation

One thing the pompous can't stand is ridicule.

Not superheroes, really, just people in funny costumes.  You could as easily take it as a joke about the relentless march of tawdry American culture.  But the important thing is that IT'S NOT FUNNY.

That and that it mocks the Soviets, and thus is worthy even if you’re not a big fan of comic books. :)

From the linked-to article: Russia is demanding that Bulgaria try harder to prevent vandalism of Soviet monuments....

But, but--it's not vandalism; the Bulgarians are just correcting the record.

Or they're showing a dangerous breadth of knowledge of American...literature.

The Hungarians did a good job with this. Rather than destroy the old status and public art and create resentment among the remaining communists, they just moved everything out into a field in a suburban neighborhood and made a tourist attraction out of it. Definitely worth a visit if you go to Budapest.

I don't have the funds to do so, but after seeing examples of cow parade cows some years ago, I thought it would be fun to purchase a Soviet-era statue and give it a similar treatment. Good to see that the Bulgarians have done it.

Those cows look like fun. Rather like painting a carousel animal, which I've always wanted to do. I keep thinking I'll see one someday in an antique store.

Making fun of the Soviet stuff is excellent -- conservatives need to be better at humor, too.

Bratislava had a great charity cow parade maybe 10 years ago:

Here's one in front of the Community Insurance (Komunalna Poistovna) in a big square; there were over 100 all around the city, all different. Some of the big new malls had a dozen or so each.
