I was just reading a early-twentieth-century piece musing about the technological advances of the nineteenth century, and wondering whether the twentieth century could possible sustain the pace.

I understand there was some talk of closing the patent office.
A police detective I know claims to have stopped the bleeding of a deep gunshot wound by using a tampon.
I read (inconjunction with this article elsewhere) that Army medics sometimes carry tampons for that purpose.
I imagine that this is an improvement.
