The Last Days of Summer

The autumnal equinox will be, locally, a little after sunrise on Tuesday. This is therefore the last weekend of summer. For Tolkien, embedded in English weather, that would metaphorically imply the end of a long and happy season, and the beginning of a time of increasing sorrow. Elrond is said to be 'as kind as summer,' and the elvish singing best in June.

In the South, even in the mountains, the summer has a less-kind sense. High summer is very hot and humid, and not a perfect time to do much of anything. Late summer is often fairly brutal, with frequent storms as well as lingering, punishing heat. The coming of autumn is a welcome relief and the opening of a period of great weather and -- as the trees turn -- phenomenal natural beauty.

Next weekend I have plans to attend a big motorcycle rally over in Tennessee. This weekend I am staying closer to home -- today I don't even plan to leave. I'm smoking some chicken and turning some red jalapenos into chipotles, and now that it's afternoon I've cracked a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. A few motorcycle repairs, just minor maintenance stuff, and listening to the thunder roll in from the anvil heads soaring over the mountains.

Just a quiet afternoon as we wait for the astronomical transition.

In my part of Texas, around the beginning of September, the temperature drops from 97-103 to 90-95. Lows drop from 78 to 73-75. That hasn't happened this year. The hottest September I can recall.

Even in the drought year (2011-12), when a 12 month rainfall went from an average of 35 to 12 inches, when there were 3 months of 100+ degree weather, the temperature dropped in September. IIRC, right after the high went to 107, the temperature dropped to below 100. (IIRC)

Up in the Texas Panhandle, we finally dropped into the 90s last week after being parked in the low 100s for the last few days of July and most of August. August is generally hot, with one very strong cold front that plows in and takes the edge off in the latter part of the month. That has not happened yet, although we should, perhaps, maybe, be in the upper 70s and more moist this week. Maybe. The Tri-State-Fair is in progress, so it should be either baking hot, or very stormy, by tradition.

It's like a switch flipped here. Sunday had a high of 100, then just preceding the equinox it changed to highs in the 80s since Monday. Still very little rain, though.

We had a similar temperature swing, but perhaps even wider. I have heard it said that 'the weather went from 90 to 50 so fast you'd have thought it saw a State Trooper.'

Funny. I'll remember that.
