Platner has no reason to fold; he holds an Ace high straight flush, dealt from a deck stacked in his favor.
The Progressive-Democratic Party has no mechanism for dumping him from the November ballot after he won the primary and so Party's nomination as fair and square as anything Party does.
His term for voluntarily quitting is he gets to name his successor, and his deadline is 13 Jul. Party will have to abjectly surrender to get Platner out, but at the cost of getting Platner Jr.
Party won't gain anything by surrendering, and if it doesn't, they'll at least get credit, such as it is, for not being even more feckless than it was in selecting Platner in the first place.
And they got Platner in the same way Party got AOC when she won her first primary: nobody cared enough to get out of the house and go vote for the other, while she, and he, did the work of getting their voters out.
What standards? They let this guy win a primary knowing all that bad news, drive him out of the running and then do what? Pick who the party wants or pick the runner up from the primary he won?
Everything I have read indicates the standard was "this guy is now too toxic to beat Collins". I guess that's a standard but it's a pretty flexible one.
Grim, I respect your sources but upon further reflection and reading, Platner's announcement only said he was suspending his campaign and from a post on Powerline it appears he hasn't yet filed the paperwork due at the end of business on Monday (July 13) to officially withdraw.
Yeah I saw that post too. We know that he is a man of low character and little obvious honor; I would guess that he’s using this last bit of leverage to try to extract some concessions from the Party regarding his future. All he can do now is delay the start of the new candidate’s already abbreviated campaign; or, if he derails the Party, ensure that he has no future in politics. He will receive no further support in his race from the institution.
Or he got pretty much what he was demanding as his quid pro quo. The list of replacements consists of far Left types pretty much in his political style, perhaps with less personal baggage.
Mills is not on that list, though she'd already shown herself unable to compete in this season's contest.

All very reasonable points, but my sources are good.

Yup, multiple reports he is suspending his campaign.
For a while it looked like there might not be any standard at all. It’s a win even if it’s not everything we might want.

I think they were going for an outlaw appeal, but they picked a guy who was all hat and no cattle.

I'm not sure Platner has any future in politics in any event. Having nothing left to lose can be freeing for those of a certain mindset.

Let’s hope not. He must’ve decided he got all he could; he formally withdrew yesterday.
