Canada Cowboys

Tom's Corb Lund post, below, reminds me that though we think of "Country" music as associated with Tennessee or Texas, and "Western" music as associated with the American West, Canada has actually produced a few good musicians in those genres recently. Corb has an upbeat sense of humor that a lot of people like; he's also done some more somber pieces, like "Horse Soldier," of course, but in general he conveys a strong mental health buoyed by that aforementioned good humor.

Another of these Canadian Cowboys, Colter Wall, has just announced that he is taking an indefinite leave from touring to deal with his mental health. He should be praised for taking that kind of thing seriously. It is a matter that has claimed far too many musical talents at too young ages.

It won't be a surprise, however, if you listen to his music. It has a notably darker tone even where it is playful.

I like Colter's music as music more than Corb's. There's no doubt, however, that Corb's speaks of a vibrantly healthy mind that one needn't worry about too much. It's an enviable quality; whether or not it is an imitable one is I suppose the focus and business of psychology. Best of luck to Colter Wall in pursuing that project.

I wish Colter the best. Good to take care of that stuff early.

I tend to prefer Corb for music. There's something about his voice that bothers me on some songs. But that's just me. He's good.

Corb's got some of everything from purely humorous to suicidal. I'll post some of his darker stuff this weekend just to show what I'm talking about.

I’m aware of your appreciation for Corb Lund, because you often post his songs. You don’t have to defend that preference; people are allowed to like different things. It probably is reflective of some healthy quality you’re responding to.

By the same token, I find Colter Wall’s songs often darker than I would prefer; but serious in a way that Lund often isn’t. That probably says something about me rather than about them.

I dunno. See what you think about the darker Corb Lund stuff I'll be posting today and Saturday. In today's post "Corb Lund's Outlaws" listen to "Lament for Lester Cousins" for a good example.

I should clarify that it's Colter's voice that sometimes bothers me, not Corb's. The way I first wrote it sounds like Corb's voice bothers me. And it's not on all his stuff, just a song or two that I've noticed.

Just as an fyi (and being the reprobate I am) I'm called to remind that Canada has produced many incredible Country/Western performers prior to "just recently" including such unknowns as Shania Twain, Anne Murray, (my father's all-time favorite singer) and Terri Clark (one of mine). The last of which will be performing live in Winston-Salem later this month. And yes, they're all women. What can I say, my page starts with the most recent post at the top, so I was still thinking about women in general. 0>;~}

Shania does turn up in a Hank III song, so I suppose she's not completely unknown.

I had no idea she was from Canada, though. Nor the other two.

Me, either. I'm not familiar with Terri Clark. I'll have to look up some of her stuff.

Thomas, given the current geo-political environment, I suggest this song for your first selection. 0>;~}

Ian Tyson. Who owned a ranch in Alberta, and lived what he sang about. His version of “Wind in the Wires” is the best I’ve heard.

Hey, DL, that was good. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've often thought that maybe the real problem in the Middle East is that Muslims are forbidden the fruit of the vine, but they can have all the coffee they want. That can't lead to anything good.

LR1, Corb and Ian have sung a few songs together. Here's them covering AC/DC's "Ride On" (although it's mostly Corb):

Here's Corb's tribute song after Ian passed:
