About a decade ago the military asked me how to do this. I don’t know if my advice at that time is relevant to this program.

It's good to be asked, at least.

The US Cavalry was basically dissolved in 1942, with the "cavalry" name being picked up by the Armor branch. It is unfortunate that the military decided this kind of training was important just as that generation of old Cavalry veterans was fading away.

Isn't it human nature to realize you need something just as you've lost it?

Perhaps you know the old story, a military version of Chesterton’s Wall, about the artillery general who was confused about why the manual of procedure required two soldiers to stand by and salute as the howitzers were fired. They found an old soldier and brought him out to observe the procedure to see if he could remember the reason for their inclusion. The old soldier watched and thought for a while, and then exclaimed, “I have it! They are holding the horses.”
