In a radio program I listened to recently on The Lord of the Rings and Catholicism, one of the speakers talked about the ring being analogous to sin and that our attachment to sin "gollumizes" us.
Jabba the Hutt strikes me as a hedonist so steeped in the Horror of the Same Old Thing that not only have innocent sources of pleasure palled on him, but so have some truly horrific ones.

A related thought I saw posted somewhere recently: We might find prayer more effective if we stopped thinking of it as a substitute for obedience.
