That's some of the best things to come from the Vindolanda documents - how little has changed in militaries over almost 2000 years. Troopers complain about the weather, women try to make society work even out on the edges of civilization, kids lose shoes or outgrow them before they get much wear (or die). . . And someone does a half-@ssed job when the boss isn't around, so documents survived the orders to destroy them. (Vindolanda is fun site to poke around at, and the museum is excellent.)
