Some people at least can see what's airless and stultifying about the Big Apple. It makes me wonder if Kurt Schlichter is onto something in his "Split" novels.

The thing that's infuriating about New Yorkers is that they don't see the connection: No connection forms in their minds between the politics that they despise, and the prospect of having a normal life. It doesn't form. The obvious dots don't connect. The shoe doesn't drop. Cause and effect leave no impression. It's INFURIATING. How can this not be deliberate?! What on earth is going on between these people's ears?!

"But most of the ex-New Yorkers I met in Florida didn’t come for political reasons, or because they were philosophically aligned with the state’s lightning rod of a governor. They were here because Florida was open, and because they wanted to have real lives, something their previous place of residence wouldn’t allow."
