Thunder in the Smokies

Maggie Valley. Not the greatest rally ever, but it’s good to see people getting back to life.

A beautiful Shovelhead, named after the distinctive Harley engine. The engine is cast iron, and it was the last one Harley made that you could tear all the way down at a campsite or in a hotel room with a tool bag. The downside was that you probably had to.

Mascots abound.

One of the Mad Max bikes.

I didn't know they had a rally in Maggie Valley. Have you been to any of the semi-annual Cherokee Bike Rally & Swap Meets? It's usually a weekend affair and they used to have good live music. Molly Hatchet one year and Skynyrd the next, although that was in the 90's.

Maggie Valley has a rally three times a year, at the fairgrounds just down from the Wheels Through Time Museum. That one -- if any readers are interested in motorcycles -- is a real destination. They have hundreds of historic motorcycles from every era from the very beginning of the technology. They've got flat track racers, historic bikes from the wars, bikes from the chopper era, and crates of historic engines they bought for restoration projects. Maggie Valley is very friendly to bikers in general, with hotels often boasting of it on their signage.

I haven't been to any rallies in the Cherokee border lands. The tribal government locked down especially hard during the COVID thing, too, so I haven't been by there much at all the last year. I gather they're largely re-open now, though.

This is the one I mentioned;

It's a bit more structured than when we used to go to them. Also, if you're agoraphobic, it's probably not right for you because it's very large crowds in a small space, the Cherokee Fairgrounds. Also a LOT of law enforcement presence.

Weird. I’ve never heard of it. I don’t see any evidence that it has happened since 2009, though with biker events the lack of online information doesn’t mean much. I’ll ask around next time I’m on the Reservation.

Looks like they're going to have on from Aug 20 to 22.

That’s hot weather for a big rally. I passed a question about it to a Cherokee friend. We’ll see what he says when he gets back to me.

So, that Cherokee friend says that this rally hasn't happened in several years, and won't happen this year either. Not sure why it's showing up on that one board you found, but it must be a ghost listing.
