Musical Sophistication

Recently under discussion, here are some examples from the 1930s and 1940s of music that is more complex than what you are likely to hear today. 

It might be difficult to say if these are more or less sophisticated than the medieval styles; that probably requires a lot of theoretical framework that I do not have in place.
