The pattern center in my brain is ascendant again, firing up like a fireworks display. Since all I want to do is crochet lace, maybe I ought to have been some Queen's lady in waiting. Give me a book on tape and a crochet project and life is good: it can even turn the most endless awful meeting into a productive afternoon.

Really love that zig-zag pattern. It has a boldness you don't often see in lace.
It's pretty much filet crochet, which is a binary pixellating technique generally done on a rectangular grid, and therefore often strikingly geometric. But I really like the way it incorporates other elements for the contrasting panels, and tosses in the popcorn and picot stitches for a little variety.
This is size 80 thread worked with the tiniest crochet hooks I've been able to find. I can just barely feel the hook with a fingertip, like a kind of burr at the end. I'd like to try this pattern again with some size 100 thread, slightly smaller than 80. 100 is the thinnest cotton thread on the market as far as I know. Maybe there's silk thread that's finer.
