Take me home, country roads...
That reminds me of a trip I made back home several years ago, about this time of year. When I got off the plane, the weather reminded me of the beginning of fishing season. In my rural hometown, the first day of fishing season was a big deal. When I got a rental car at the suburban location of the airport, I asked the clerk if fishing season had just begun. No, no fishing season, replied the clerk.
When I got to my rural hometown, I found out that my intuition hadn't fooled me. Fishing season HAD just begun. But fishing season was off the radar of those living in the suburbs near the airport.
No, this is just a country backroad that leads up to NC 215, south of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I’ve done the Dragon several times, but the secret is that there’s a lot of roads like it up here. It just happens to be a Federal highway, so it’s well maintained and wider than most of these.
Ok, I see it in my mind now. It's been a few years, but I used to short haul Christmas trees from the fields up past there, down to Wolf Creek Tree Farms in Tuckaseegee.

Once I got up on the high ground, I could see that a whole ridge of these mountains is on fire right now. No rain before Thursday.

Ok. I think I recognize it now. You're on NC 281 below Bear Lake and just a few miles from the Charlie's Creek/215 and Sol's Creek/281 split?
Close. That’s from Charley’s Creek Rd, near Balsam Lake.

Spring can't quite make up its mind out here, but we've had enough wind that I think the motorcycle riders are developing permanent leans! :)
