I thought I had commented, but I must have done something wrong.
The slaughter was not of all young males in Israel, or even around Jerusalem, but around Bethlehem. It was likely less than fifty killed, and would not have excited much comment outside a small range.
Perhaps community standards differ, but I would think that even "nearly fifty local families had their newborn sons murdered this week by the king" would provoke a rebellion pretty much anywhere.

Apparently not. This guy murdered his own children and at least one wife, so that may have kept others at bay, that he was crazy violent.
Americans don't see the world the way others do, mayhaps.
