Many years ago there was a populist politician in Knoxville politics named Cas Walker. Dad used to tell stories about him. On his famous radio show, the Cas Walker Farm and Home Hour (which sometimes featured the likes of Roy Acuff), Cas would often complain about other local politicians. One time he was complaining about the police's new habit of running DUI checkpoints around Knoxville.
'This practice has got to stop,' Dad reported him having said. 'Some of our best citizens are getting caught up in these things.'
Apparently Chicago feels much the same way.

Considering the week over all (and it's just Tuesday!) I'm not gonna feel to bad. I can imagine a lot worse outcomes to Juicy's little production.
I watched the head cop's and Emanuel's presser over this along with the head cop's announcement of the prior arrest. The two together gave a strong demonstration of why the charges were dropped in their entirety. When the head cop came out and announced the arrests those few weeks ago, he openly and deliberately convicted Smollett of all charges even before the grand jury had met. With that performance, the jury pool in Chicago was permanently polluted for this case. The cop and the mayor extended that performance today. Emanuel repeatedly insisted on conviction by grand jury indictment--they returned an indictment, Emanuel also repeatedly said, on "just a sliver of the evidence."
Indeed. Only a sliver. Not nearly all the evidence that a jury would have heard had the case gone to trial--just a small part of what a prosecutor would have found convenient to present, and without defense even present. With the performance of the cop and the mayor, it's not surprising to me the charges were dropped. The prosecutor's office may well have been able to indict a black forest ham, but it's doubtful in the atmosphere these two folks were at pains to create that he could have convicted Richard Dahmer.
It's been a despicable display, and now we'll never know the truth of the matter. The head cop has lent credence to the poor reputation of Chicago police, and the mayor has lent credence to the reputation of Progressive-Democrats for dishonesty.
The only thing that's questionable from the other side is Smollett having to give up his bond payment.

Yeah, that part reminded me of Jerry Clower's old story about the man who was "Not Guilty, but he has to give back the mules."
Or it was the face-saving sop to the prosecutor's office. Absent a trial, we won't even be able to know the sliver of evidence the grand jury had. All we have is what the NLMSM has chosen to publish, and the displays of a head cop and a mayor.

Interestingly, the CPD released the case files to satisfy a FOIA request before the court ordered sealing of the records took effect, thereby circumventing the sealing.
There's some kind of 'war' going on behind this I think.
