As someone who works with the homeless mentally ill to earn my daily bread, it is not true that the library is the only free way for them to find out where food pantries, shelters, inexpensive housing, and jobs. While one can find out about such things at the library, most people get that info from other homeless people, city welfare offices, and churches.
In 40 years I have never had a patient identify the library as a resource for anything other than reading material and a place to check their email. I'm sure some people use the library computers for more, but it's not the go-to source.
