There was a rumor I heard before that the dragon motiff associated with Merlin or Arthur's power, was due to the shape of the roads. The individual rocks or scales that allowed the post Roman civilization in Briton to mobilize QRFs to raids by the Irish or the Picts and later on the Vikings too.
