When good sons go . . . military

Bookworm Room, who lives in Marin County surrounded by progressives, reports an odd development:  some of her hyper-progressive neighbors have sons who are choosing to join the military.  The parents are starting to change their attitudes.

When the Spousal One was deployed in Iraq, my very liberal in-laws (DIL's parents) had me over for a party. One of their friends' son (they're Jewish) had joined the Israeli armed forces. This was during the period where Israel was being shelled.

They were so conflicted - they clearly were proud of him, but also rather horrified that he was in the military and in harm's way.

It was a very weird conversation, mostly consisting of, "How do you deal with this?"

Keeping Faith by Frank Schaeffer (son of Francis Schaeffer, but rather disowning that) recounts the amazement from other Volvo/prep school/Massachusetts parents when his son enlisted in the Marines, and what it taught him.

Thanks for that, AVI.

You may have just found my suggestion for the neighborhood Book Club. I'm joining this month - naturlich, they're reading Ta-Nehisi Coates, "Between the World and Me".

Pray for me (or at least for my self restraint). I suspect it will be sorely tested :p

I would pay cash money to watch a meeting of that.

Not feeling hopeful on the whole self-restraint thing. I nearly had a stroke reading the reviews on my Kindle this morning :p

You owe it to us to record these meetings and post them here. I'm not sure they know what they're up against.

Yanno what I should post? My photos of hiking in Sedona. They're right up there with Grim's wonderful traveling photos.

I wonder if book club Tourette's is covered under ObamaCare?

You've got posting rights. Post whatever you want. :)

I don't think I have any idea how to go about that any more, Grim. I probably deleted all that stuff when I quit at VC.

I found the last joke blog I did (before the never-debuted Mitt Romney's Hair in 2012), but nothing else besides a few Soldiers' Angels blogs I designed for them many moons ago.

Easily fixed. I just sent you a new invitation. You don't have to post, of course, but you should always feel welcome whenever you like.

Thank you :)

I don't know that I'll have much time for posting, but it's nice to know I can if I have an attack of online Tourette's.

Or just want to share pretty pictures of rocks or hiking trails.
