Why teach Shakespeare?

Megan McArdle has dived again into the "pale dead men" pedagogical debate.  Here are a couple of bids to make the Bard more culturally relevant for the modern student:

The count was off only by about one, but when you're the POV character and that one is you, it makes a difference!

I would totally watch this version.

The truth is, I don't think I've ever failed to enjoy a Shakespeare version, adaptation, modernization, knockoff, or outright parody, starting in early youth with "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead." My mother took me to see it in San Francisco when I was about 12; what a revelation. I was pretty confused, though, not really being familiar with Hamlet.
