Hm, Where's That Bible?

Our Secretary of State has apparently decided the right way to persuade Muslim countries is by quoting the Bible. Well, not quoting:
"Confronting climate change is, in the long run, one of the greatest challenges that we face, and you can see this duty or responsibility laid out in Scriptures clearly, beginning in Genesis. And Muslim-majority countries are among the most vulnerable. Our response to this challenge ought to be rooted in a sense of stewardship of Earth, and for me and for many of us here today, that responsibility comes from God,” he continued.
So, where was it that God puts humankind in charge of the "climate"? I assume he's thinking of Genesis 1, where we get the general authorities. But they don't include hegemony over the skies, the seas, or anything like the weather.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them: and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food:

30 and to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heavens, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for food: and it was so.
In fact, in the Book of Job, the absence of these powers are among the reasons God uses to draw Job's attention to his lack of wisdom and power.
8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, When it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb;

9 When I made clouds the garment thereof, And thick darkness a swaddling-band for it,

10 And marked out for it my bound, And set bars and doors,

11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further; And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
If you're old enough to remember 2008, you know who thought he would have the power to bid the oceans cease to rise: "Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further!"
34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover thee?

35 Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, And say unto thee, Here we are?
Well, canst thou, John Kerry?

Naah, I hear that King Canute was elected in 1014, not 2014.

But yeah, trying to convert real primitives to romantic primitivism doesn't sound like a great prospect.

(Though it seems he's not doing that, so much as blaming the dirty, evil U.S. for oppressing them through climate change.)

I think the Canute story is generally agreed to be a legend, but I heard the gentlemen Senator say it in 2008 with my own ears. Well, via broadcast.

This is precisely the sort imposing our views on the past that will do us in. The Gospel of Nice, the Theology of False Dichotomies, the Worship of Our Own Opinions.

The commandment about taking the Lord's name in vain has nothing to do with bad language or making promises. It is about not forging God's signature under one's own opinions. It is condemned in the strongest possible terms, Genesis to Revelation, often enough that we should all tremble to venture any opinion at all. Declaring what God wants us to do is a very dangerous act, which even sincere and humble believers should hesitate at. For Joe Biden, it is an incredible arrogance.

IS is massacring people and he's worried about climate change?

They're hopeless.

I believe in being good stewards of the Earth. If I could be convinced that we're doing harm with CO2, I'd be much more interested in cutting back on it.

It's an inaccurate nostalgic view, too. Consider the condition of Earth some millions of years ago when ACO2 was some orders of magnitude higher than it is today. Tough to blame on human activity then, but it was warm enough then that the Arctic ice cap was non-existent. Were we a runaway hothouse like Venus? Nope--life was lush and verdant.

Warmer temperatures aren't a threat, even were they a likelihood. This is what happens when you put motor boat skippers, community organizers, and dilettantes in the room with adults who don't like us very much.

The Islamic response to bad PR in the West for jihad was always to talk about how Jesus Christ was recognized as another prophet, that Christianity is a brother of the Book, that there's no problem there.

Heh.

Mohammed must have beat so many slaves and females when he had to make mention of Jesus Christ, a real prophet, one that he couldn't just kill because Christ was already resurrected and in Heaven (some say as Archangel Michael killing dragons).

That must have stung ol pedo Mohamie there.
