So, the best defense against the Mongols would have been massive grass fires, repeated regularly? (Not actually sure that's feasible because I don't know much about the steppes over there.)Fascinating article.
I wonder if anyone ever thought of doing that- of course, there go your grazing lands too then... Unless you can do it further out.
