Coincidentally, the Times also recently carried a Hudson report calling for the US to begin serious planning efforts for the sudden collapse of the Communist state in China. That's a good idea. We should be planning for sudden collapses in several places, of which China is one. The system of the last few decades is coming to an end, and some things are going to fail unexpectedly and suddenly when it hits the wall. The question might be which of the monoliths is still around when the smoke clears, if any are.

So. If Xi is history, why would the ChiCom state collapse? They usually have a pretty well-organized succession plot.
Xi has been consolidating power and purging the military, especially, as well as other loci of power within the PRC structure. They might make it through, but an unexpected collapse of a central figure is fraught. Mao's death was probably the last time they had to navigate one, and he lingered for a very long time in dotage: there was plenty of time to get used to the idea, plan, and arrange support for a successor.
