That's a rule I've always hated about soccer, anyway. If the offender could get past the defense, he deserved everything he could get. If the defense allowed the offender to get past it, they deserved all the opprobrium coming their way.
But, no-o-o-o. Protect the poor, little defender.
And another rule: if the defense can get the ball back across the Centerline and into the other half of the pitch, does the offensive team have to clear out its offensive half and restart its attack? No, of course not. sigh
