My passage through the Tennessee mountains went smoother than that of certain German prisoners of war. Of course, I know better than to trespass on Granny's property.

Sheriff was embarrassed that Granny did a better job than his deputies at controlling the "prisoners". Never doubt a granny. They know a few things, because they've seen a few things.

"Helpless" escaped prisoners. I imagine the sheriff got over his annoyance.
