Well, for "A channel dedicated to exploring the 18th Century lifestyle," much work needs to be done in the imagination. After all, we can't go back. It is more of a re-enactment channel rather than an academic history channel.
Hot buttered ale is not a common drink these days; hot buttered rum has replaced it in America, at least. But it's a good drink, well, both of them are.

You've had hot buttered ale? I'd never even heard of it before.
Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had hot buttered rum, either, and I tend to like rum and rum drinks.
