In looking up what had happened to some high school peers, I came across a comment in an obituary. Someone commenting on the obituary quoted the ex-wife: " 'We killed a lot of brain cells, back then!' We did! But they are great memories."
It's kind of funny now, hanging out with friends who used to drink a lot but who have given it up for one reason or another. They're clearly happier, so the cheer that it gives to the moment must not be a generally uplifting thing. Yet, I do find that I'm reliably happier after a beer than beforehand.
