and instantly, I figured we'd found the suit fit for our gracious host (perhaps less the gold chains).

I don’t know what to say. Let me reflect on this.
Here in north-central rural Ohio, Carhartt is a fashion statement. They have a full line of heavy duty work clothes. I own a very nice barn coat, good down to about 20 to 30 degrees.
Carhart is great stuff. Flimsy and comfy for hot weather is great if it's cheap enough to be disposable once it's been stained or torn by ordinary use, but for clothing that's meant to last, give me a nice, indestructible material.
This signals carhartts doom as a company. Every time an old respected manufacturer of solid products decides to get into a "Designer" or "consumer" or "upscale" market, the line of products turn to crap over a few years, along with usually going to offshore manufacturing.
I was acquainted with the man who was the manufacturer's representative for Carhartt (along with a few other lines of men't clothing.)
Back then--about 40 years ago--that meant nothing. Now? He's very wealthy and so are his children who took over the business. Helped that Menard's is headquartered in his territory, too....
Well, I daresay I never expected to leave Grim speechless- particularly over something like this!

I suppose the tension is multi-directional: Carhartt isn't what it used to be, was your take if I remember correctly, and you aren't much for suits, but agree there is a time and place for everything, but if you had to wear a suit, this has some merits as coming from a line of authentic workwear, on the other hand, it's been modified to fashion and isn't really workwear any longer...
Quite the dilemma.
Sykes, I'd be more worried if he was just a fashion plate sort of guy- but he isn't. He's an honest to God chicken farmer and country boy at heart, from what I've seen of him.
Oh, and apparently, it's been dubbed the "Duxedo".
I wonder, did Carhartt make the suit, or did Miller have it tailor made?

My "fashion statement" comment was sorta tongue-in-cheek. Although nearly all the farmers and most laborers in my area wear Carhartts. But I agree with raven said that the suit might be a bad sign.

I think I agree with raven too. Stetson went through this cycle, and it's now hard to find a Stetson hat that's as good as the old ones were -- and they're very pricey, even given the cost change in beaver pelts. Probably it's not a great sign.
Stetson's after shave is now for sale at Dollar General, though, so that trend may have played out. At some point, fashion moves on, and you have to get back to serving the working people who stuck with you.
Ah, sorry Sykes- I was indeed intending to respond to Raven's comment.
That said, I do think the concern is legitimate, though it seems Carhartt has an actual working class base that really does need the clothes for work (as opposed to Stetson, whoe base has dwindled for decades for various reasons) that they should be able to weather these whims of fashion.
