Generally a sentence to punishment like this has been practically reserved to the divine, and for good reasons. Some things it would be better not to invent.
I seem to recall a science fiction story written in the 1960s or '70s about a man who committed murder in the far future, and who was condemned to eternal life. The state provided him with the best medical care possible but kept the reason why secret. Every time he tried to kill himself, he was saved. His body aged and he became frail but his mind remained mostly intact. It was described as hell.
