Conan stands watch over the pork
In preparation for the Independence Day feast, I have had a pork butt in the smoker since the early morning. There will also be three kinds of sausages reflecting the America 'melting pot' of cultures: German bratwurst, French/Cajun andouille, and Spanish/Mexican chorizo. The pulled pork is a classic of Southern American cuisine, of course.
American beer will be served, Pabst Blue Ribbon and Dale's American Pale Ale. Prospective guests must get past a German Shepherd dog who doesn't know you.

Good Conan.
At Mangil-san we had a dog, a pet of the squadron as a whole, named FUD, a name that had two meanings, depending on his behavior--he was a free spirit.
We had a pig roast one fall day, and for the entire night and day leading up to uncovering the pig, FUD stood guard over the pit to ensure it did not get dug up prematurely.
He truly was a Fine Upstanding Dog then.

I'll show up covered in Hoppe's #9, diesel oil and beer. Conan will recognize a friend.
Alas, due to a prior commitment I am unable to travel that far on short notice. I will raise a soda pop to the honor of the day tomorrow.
Perhaps it is an economic indicator, or a sign of growing optimism, but more people in my neighborhood have been smoking meat this summer. Last year it was only on memorial Day, the Fourth, and Labor Day. Now it is every other weekend, from different houses. Make of it what you will.

Good dog.
That sounds like it might work.
I haven't smoked a pork butt in a while, but that's more because I've been trying to switch to leaner meats. I think people have made economic adjustments, though; and it may be that things are getting a little better, too.
