Wooden Viking "Sword" Found in Ireland

This one is said to be "perfectly preserved," which is always surprising in a thousand year old find.

It's the land of bogs. Google "bog butter".

To go along with Eric,s point, this past summer I got to see four of the bog bodies when I was at the big state museum in Schleswig, Germany (museum for Schleswig-Holstein). The display is amazing, and they have lots of information about the finds - in German, although you can get an English highlights guide. The Nydam Boat and other less famous bog-boats are also there. The preservation is remarkable, so long as the material is not metal. Organic remains last forever in bogs, or so it seems. metals disappear even faster than they do in soil.

That must have been an interesting experience.
