Making a splash

You know you've arrived on the national progressive scene when your impassioned plea to be excused from final exams at Harvard Law School (because social injustice bums you out) generates an argument in the comments section over whether it's meant as a parody.

Welcome to the real world, cupcake.

This semester just ended, for the first time I had a student who almost dropped out right before finals because his girlfriend dumped him. I almost didn't know what to say- but managed to inform him that while I was sympathetic (a little), I didn't know what he could do about his relationship, but I did know that he could do something about his grade, and years from now, it would matter how he did. He managed to just do enough to hold onto a decent grade, having been a stronger student up to that point. Just in the six or so years I've been teaching, I think we're starting to see the results of the 'trophies for everyone' child rearing generation.

I can understand someone who is so depressed over his love life that he wants to quit school, even though I think (from the benefit of my position outside depression) that it's a mistake.

It's harder to understand kids who think the school should accommodate their opting out without actually kicking them out of school.
