I grew up for a while in Omaha and I recall seeing the grain and other goods going by barge. It was more common then, and water levels on the Missouri were higher (no conservation flow).
Coal country may just be the deciding factor in this election, being a good size chunk of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and of course West Virginia. Obama's war on fossil fuels, particularly coal ('your rates would necessarily skyrocket') might just come around to bite him in the rear.

I was more noticing the Gadsden Flag on the barge.
