The Feast of St. Patrick

St. Patrick's Day was a conflicted day in my childhood, given the large proportion of Scots-Irish ancestry in our genes. My brother, who was at the time neither politically inclined nor well-read, wore an orange shirt on March 17 in 8th grade, in response to his principal's plugging of the Green. The principal had the courtesy to compliment my brother on standing up for himself. Maybe I didn't wear orange on March17 because I had a JFK campaign poster on my bedroom walls. ( I regret that I didn't store the poster safely away--it got thrown out.) A Jewish schoolmate wore both orange and green on March 17. Such political instincts also saw him elected Class Treasurer.
