East meets West

I ran into a treasury of Limericks at a used bookstore recently that I really wanted, by my wife refused to allow it into the house. Not all of them were ribald, though of course -- given the genre -- very many of them were. It's such an amusing form.

One of the most difficult Limerick contests the late pathology professor had on his blog was: Make up a PG-rated Limerick starting with "There was an old man from Nantucket."

Asimov was asked to judge a limerick contest once and said it was an interesting and enjoyable experience. You read and laugh at all the dirty ones, but you throw them out, because there is no way you are going to publish those, and those who submitted them completely get that. Then you pick the best of the remaining three and declare it the winner.

There was an old man of Nantucket
Who kept all his cash in a bucket;
But his daughter, named Nan
Ran away with a man --
And as far as the bucket, Nantucket.
